Sunday in LA

I started the day off with a hike with my shadow before heading downtown to Dwell on Design to meet up with my friends from Modwalls.   Squeezed in 15 minutes to run around the show.  I found it encouraging to be surprised by the quality of exhibitors and the general feel of the show as they have had a couple of rough years. I waved hello to John at Semi Handmade who makes stunning high end fronts for standard cabinets like those from Ikea, and liked the beautiful fragile strength of the paper walls and furniture at Molo, the colorful lamps at David Trubridge, and the careful workmanship at Sam Maloof.  And now Leo and I are hanging out in the shop!  What a great day!

Happy Weekend

Sneak peek from a photo shoot for the next issue of our magazine: A Journey In Color!   Have a fun weekend!

Friday's Fabulous Woman: Sarah Moon

These words from a PhotoIcon article by Laura Noble entitled The Shadows of Style say it all:   "With a long career comes reflection. In the case of Sarah Moon, the passing of time has done little to dull the magical quality of her work. Her photography lives in a mysterious place between waking and dreaming, art and fashion. This place never seems to age, as its themes are often taken from myth, fantasy and fairytale residing in a dislocated familiarity and strangeness."

Based in Paris, Moon's fashion photography has appeared everywhere, from French Elle to Italian Vogue, and she has collaborated with designer names as diverse as Biba, Cacharel, Comme des Garçons and Chanel. She now spends much of her time creating and directing short films.  The Independent article Frocks And Fantasy is another great read.

This video is her work in her words.

Photos are a selection from the Fahey/Klein show of her work: Coincidences.

To Forever Friends

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band including Clarence 'Big Man' Clemons on sax playing Hyde Park, London in 2009.

Nuria Mora

Incredible wall murals by Madrid artist, Nuria Mora that marry and contrast color and pattern with urban decay.  These images come from her website which is worth a visit as she has a phenomenal portfolio, and from a great interview on Subaquatica

I originally saw her work on Poppytalk.

Bath Time

A great bathroom is such a wonderful sanctuary and it can be as unique and creative as any other room in the house.  I love these tubs and tiles on GAP Interiors.

Modwalls And Rex Ray

My friends over at Modwalls who have a Henry Road Tile Collection have just added a fabulous new line designed by San Francisco artist, Rex Ray. The Lush Rex Ray Studio line is a cool blend of newsprint and mod dots that can be mixed and matched. If you are in LA, they will be showing it at Dwell on Design this weekend.

Story Vase

The new issue of Vogue Living had been popped through the post slot at the shop this morning and was lying there waiting for me to gush.  It is a particularly great issue with lots of things I love so a few of them will make their way to my blog this week.

First up: Story Vases by the Swedish design group, Front that were on show earlier this year in Milan.  Story Vases tell the personal stories of five women from South Africa.   Each woman formed their own story into text by threading glass beads on to metal wires which were made into vase-shaped moulds, into which glass was blown resulting in stunning vases.

Henry Road Music Video Fame

Spot our shop in this Colin Hay video for his song Send Somebody.   It was a fun shoot with great people and we love the end result.  Happy Monday!

Happy Father's Day

"My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass"; "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys"."

That great quote about being a Dad comes from American League baseball player, Harmon Killebrew (1936-2011). To all the Dads out there--Thank you!

Friday's Fabulous Woman: Lidewij Edelkoort

Friday's Fabulous is back!  My apologies for slacking off the past couple of weeks.   This week the spotlight is on one of the top trend forecasters in the world, Lidewij Edelkoort.   Edelkoort has an impressive resume including multiple awards.   One of them being named one of the world’s 25 most influential people in fashion by TIME magazine n 2003.  She and her team announce colors, concepts and materials which will be in fashion two years in advance.

I love this description of her job on her site:  "Travelling, shopping and searching the world over, Li Edelkoort is constantly gathering information and emotions, studying the fabric of society, picking up materials, words, figures and flowers like a global beachcomber." The online library of images featured in Bloom, the magazine she publishes is beyond delicious and fabulous.  I hope you enjoy it as weekend reading.
